Overview
Matariki is the Māori New Year, marked by the first appearance of the Matariki star cluster in the dawn sky during winter in Aotearoa New Zealand.
For many Māori, Matariki is a time of remembrance, gratitude, renewal, and planning for the year ahead. It is both a cultural and astronomical observance, connecting people with family, community, ancestors, the natural world, and the cycles of the seasons.
Since 2022, Matariki has been recognised as a public holiday in New Zealand.
The Star Cluster
Matariki is known internationally as the Pleiades star cluster, located within the constellation Taurus.
The cluster becomes visible in the eastern pre-dawn sky during the New Zealand winter and has long been used by cultures around the world as a seasonal marker.
In Māori tradition, the stars of Matariki carry their own names, stories, and associations.
Themes
Remembrance
Matariki is a time to remember those who have passed since the previous rising of the stars.
Celebration
Families and communities gather to share food, stories, music, and culture.
Reflection
The season encourages people to reflect on the year that has passed.
Renewal
Matariki marks the beginning of a new cycle and an opportunity to set intentions for the future.
Connection
The observance reinforces relationships with whānau (family), community, ancestors, and the natural world.
Why It Matters
Matariki reminds us that time can be measured not only by calendars and clocks, but also by the rhythms of nature and the sky.
It offers an example of how astronomy, culture, memory, and community can be woven together into a shared tradition.
For A-Way, Matariki represents the Indigenous tradition’s emphasis on place, ancestry, stewardship, and connection.

A-Way Reflection
As the stars return each winter, Matariki invites us to remember those who came before us, appreciate what we have today, and consider what kind of future we wish to build together.
That last reflection section is something I’d add to every A-Way wiki entry. It helps distinguish your wiki from Wikipedia by connecting facts to the broader themes of the site.
